With more than one hundred and thirty courses to choose from, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey will refresh your artistic spirit. Beginners will find a variety of introductory classes and workshops to give them the right start, and experienced artists can expand their creativity in one of our intermediate or advanced offerings. Child and teen students also have a wide variety of classes from which to choose.

Raku fever is in the house!  Excited to get a head start on the fall Raku firing? Get ahead of the game by throwing and decorating a handful of pieces in this six week course. Taping techniques and glazing will be covered. Students must use raku clay for pieces intended for raku firing (can be purchased at the Art Center). Instruction of finishing techniques will also be provided for students who wish to create pieces for regular cone 6 firing.

The Art Center features two fantastic extruders that can do so much more than just hang on the wall. Participants will create fabulous projects ranging from bowls and vases, from sculptures and mirror frames and even butter dishes. You will even learn how to create interesting decorative enhancements using each of our two extruders.

There is something mysterious about containers just as there is something elegant about their design. In this special summer class, master box builder Pete Syak will share all of his secrets with participants as they explore methods used to design, create and decorate lidded ceramic vessels using both handbuilt and wheel thrown methods.

Drawing is an extremely rewarding and challenging activity that requires a logical sequence of drawing principals. This course will cover the most important aspect of drawing: How to observe three dimensional forms. Learning how to block in a drawing will be a key factor in the success of a drawing. A focus will be placed on studies to increase our skills. The goal of this course is to expand on the artist’s natural ability through fundamental skills and practice. Students will sketch from various still life set ups. Artists may also bring in objects of interest to sketch from. Each student will be taught according to their skill level. This class will focus on breaking forms down into their most basic shapes and how to understand value and linear structure. By the end of each class, students will have a significantly easier time executing their thoughts onto a two-dimensional surface. By focusing on each student’s individual hurdles and helping them to overcome them, this class will expand their ability to create artwork with fewer limitations and dramatically improve their control of the use of their materials.

Spend some time in a tranquil studio setting, away from the busy outside world trying out different drawing and painting materials. You’ll have a roomy work space in an art-friendly atmosphere. Just bring some paper or canvas and a supportive, patient instructor will help with ideas and techniques. Beginning and experienced artists will find the studio workshop a special place to create. And you don’t need to worry about staining the carpet!

A painting doesn’t need to be realistic to be outstanding. Discover your voice as a painter as you explore non-representational painting techniques to express your visual ideas. Abstract painting is no different than painting from life. You will learn the structure of making images including, format, composition, rhythm, color, surface and texture. Figure it out! Study figure drawing, an extremely rewarding and challenging activity. Learn to simplify the complex nature of drawing the human form by getting familiar with basic anatomy to better understand the figure. Because our poses are short, you will be able to focus on how to initiate a figure drawing, through basic structuring. Repetition and practice are key elements in expressing yourself with confidence. In this informative class, you will learn about your digital camera by deciphering camera operation, creative concepts, digital retouching and printing. Make corrections and alterations in Photoshop on your own images. Each class is a further exploration of your hidden (or not so hidden) inner photographer. Discover the potential of paper as a sculpture medium. We will cover the various techniques to make paper pliable and the types of papers that you can sculpt, carve, shape, and paper mache with.
