Spring Classes start April 17, 2017

With more than one hundred and thirty courses to choose from, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey will refresh your artistic spirit. Beginners will find a variety of introductory classes and workshops to give them the right start, and experienced artists can expand their creativity in one of our intermediate or advanced offerings. Child and teen students also have a wide variety of classes from which to choose.

Late Registration: We no longer charge late registration fees! You have 2 weeks after the beginning of the term to enter a class at full price. After that, the classes will be closed. Please note: Studio School classes will not be prorated for late entry or early departure.

The Ceramics studio has all sorts of great equipment including extruders, a slab roller and wheels.  It also contains textures, gadgets and hidden treasures just waiting to be discovered and become part of your designs.  In this class, we will explore ways to utilize the underappreciated studio assets to create both sculptural and functioning ceramic items.  Along the way we will seek out ways to develop your personal style and make our machines your friends.  This will class will give participants the opportunity to push clay and imagination to the limit as we create everything from perfume bottles and vases to chalices and architectural features. A photograph is a great model to inspire creation. Many of the world’s master painters have used the photograph as a visual record and inspiration for new developments in painting. Pastel is a versatile and direct medium as well as a seamless way to transition from drawing into painting. In this class we will explore a variety of materials and working methods of soft pastel. Demonstrations will be given on techniques such as layered color mixing, scumbling and blending. A solid foundation of composition, color and value will be addressed through exercises using still life and landscape. There are countless ways to work in pastel, so experimentation is encouraged! During the second half of the class everyone will work on projects of their choice with individual feedback and constructive group critiques.

Paint with molten beeswax! You will explore encaustics, the art of painting with molten beeswax mixed with colored pigments and resin. This unusual medium provides results like no other medium—mysterious, deep and translucent. You will gain the fundamental knowledge of working with encaustics, allowing for personal exploration. You will receive informal critiques of your work in an environment where having discussions, taking risks, letting go of preconceived notions, and having fun is encouraged. Figure it out! You will study figure drawing, an extremely rewarding and challenging activity. You will learn to simplify the complex nature of drawing the human form by getting familiar with basic anatomy to better understand the figure. If so, you will learn techniques of freehand style brush works in the beautiful world of Chinese brush painting.  You will learn step-by-step how to use simple brush strokes to create vivid images of flowers, birds, fish, bamboo and more while also practicing how to incorporate texture and unique wash techniques essential for landscape painting.
