Through exploring the processes of drawing, collage and painting we will examine
still life paintings as a thematic mode of storytelling. Through exploring history and
studio exploration we will discover what constitutes the identity of an object by
breaking down the visual signs that give it meaning. All materials included.
All students will learn the “watercolor essentials” including the fundamentals of
color, composition, value structure, color blocking, washes, and form.
Beginner students will tackle subjects and techniques that will build confidence in
the medium. More advanced students will take on more challenging compositions.
The goal for all students will be painting experiences that is enriching and
enjoyable, and will spark the desire to explore additional classes. Students will also
come away from the course with finished paintings that will serve to document their
This class will serve as a catalyst to expand our definition of painting while focusing on understanding and exploring its full range of historical and contemporary manifestations. Students will understand, and utilize, a variety of painting techniques and become proficient with the mediums of oil and acrylic paint. Throughout the course of the semester, students will discover concrete and conceptual methods of addressing form and content in painting. Students will be encouraged to actively seek out specific artists and art historical periods to facilitate the understanding of various thought processes, painting techniques, and different media. This class will address traditional, modern, and contemporary philosophies that embodying or influence different styles of painting. Students will develop critical, broad, and diverse ways of thinking about painting. Students are expected to work independently and in class. When called for, progress critiques will be conducted throughout the course. Critiques provide an opportunity to explore and push the boundaries of your thinking and practice.
Paint luminous landscapes! With engaging lectures and demonstrations on value, drawing, atmosphere, color mixing, composition, and creating dynamic light effects, you will learn how to turn simple landscape photographs into luminous landscape paintings. Even though painting plein air can be frustrating with fast moving light, and painting from photos can be misleading, you will apply skills acquired during class to create a magical, light-filled landscape on canvas. All levels, including beginners, are welcome and encouraged. All media welcome.
Intro to Graphic Design is a foundation course that develops a student’s ability to
analyze design using basic principles and theory applicable to all forms of design. The
course is based on the application of the fundamental elements of design. The student is
introduced to tools and techniques used in today’s communication industry. This
course lays the base for more advanced design courses.
Students will learn the basic principles of blending social interaction with
technology to target and develop conversations about brand messaging.
Artists will learn how to build their own website and buy a URL. Best practices
of social media and online engagement will be stressed to leverage and drive
traffic to website to establish an online presence.
